  • China's senior diplomat Zhang Ming has taken charge as the new Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
  • India is a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
  • Zhang Ming has been appointed in place of Vladimir Norov, former foreign minister of Uzbekistan, for a three-year term.
  • He was also China's ambassador to the European Union.
  • The Beijing headquartered SCO is an eight-member economic and security bloc consisting of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, and Pakistan.
