World Water Day is observed annually on March 22 to highlight the importance of freshwater and sustainable management. Established by the United Nations in 1993, it supports Sustainable Development Goal 6 on clean water and sanitation. The 2026 theme, “Water and Gender,” emphasises the role of women and gender equality in water access and management.
It addresses challenges such as water scarcity, pollution, and unequal distribution. The observance promotes awareness, policy action, and global cooperation. It encourages governments and individuals to adopt sustainable practices and ensure equitable access to water for a secure future.
