Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of Narendra Modi, has entered the Guinness World Records by planting over 2.5 lakh saplings within one hour. The record-breaking drive was conducted on March 1 by the Varanasi Municipal Corporation in the Domari area along the Ganga riverfront.
Around 20,000 residents participated as nearly 2.51 lakh saplings were planted using the Miyawaki method, surpassing China’s earlier record of 1.53 lakh saplings in an hour. The plantation forms part of the “Namo Van” urban forest project spread across about 350 bighas.
The Miyawaki method promotes dense planting of native species to accelerate forest growth and biodiversity. Under Namo Van, nearly three lakh trees will be planted, including timber and fruit-bearing varieties. The project also features walking tracks, meditation zones, herbal and flower parks, and recreational facilities. Officials expect improved air quality, ecological balance, and future tourism revenue from the initiative.
