  • The President of the European Parliament David Sassoli passed away in a hospital in Italy at the age of 65.
  • Sassoli was undergoing treatment for immune system disorder. 
  • He had led the European Union body that approves or rejects legislation and is responsible for establishing budgets and supervising a combination of institutions.
  • The European Parliament sits for a five-year term between elections, but the president of the body serves for half that time.
  • He was a member of the centre-left Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, the second-biggest grouping in the parliament after the centre-right European People's Party.
