  • Folk singer Maithili Thakur has been appointed as the state icon for Bihar by the Election Commission.
  • Thakur, trained in Indian classical and folk music, was recently selected for the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar of the Sangeet Natak Akademi for her contribution to the folk music of Bihar for 2021.
  • The singer will create awareness among the voters for their participation in the electoral process.
  • Belonging to Benipatti in Madhubani district of Bihar, she was trained by her father and grandfather in Maithili folk music, besides Hindustani classical music. 
  • She has displayed her talent in singing folk songs, particularly in three languages— Maithili, Bhojpuri and Hindi. 
  • Along with her two brothers, Rishav and Ayachi, she has performed in various national and international events.
