The World Inequality Report 2026 places India among the most unequal large economies, with the richest 10% capturing 58% of national income and the top 1% holding 22.6%, levels last seen during the colonial era. Wealth concentration is even starker, with the top 10% owning 65% of household assets. The report highlights deep gender, regional and social disparities and attributes rising inequality to technological shifts, corporate concentration, weak labour protections and regressive taxation. It recommends wealth and inheritance taxes along with expanded universal services to address the growing divide.
