The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has mandated SIM-binding for all online messaging platforms, requiring apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Snapchat and others to function only when the SIM used during registration remains active on the device. If the registered SIM is absent, the app must stop working. For web versions, users must be auto-logged out every six hours. These measures aim to curb cyber fraud and strengthen digital security. Non-compliance will attract action under the Telecommunications Act, 2023, the Telecom Cyber Security Rules, and related laws.
