According to the NCRB, India saw over 1.73 lakh road accident deaths in 2023, up 17,261 from 2022, with 4.64 lakh accidents causing around 4.47 lakh injuries. Two-wheelers accounted for nearly 46% of fatalities, with Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh reporting the highest numbers. Over-speeding (59%) and careless driving (24%) were the main causes, with most accidents occurring between 6 pm and 9 pm. The report calls for stricter traffic enforcement, safer roads, and greater public awareness to reduce fatalities.
