XEC was first reported in early August 2024 in Germany, The XEC variant, a recombinant of KS.1.1 and KP.3.3, has rapidly spread to 27 countries, highlighting the critical need for ongoing genomic surveillance and international collaboration to effectively monitor and respond to COVID-19 variants.
