According to the recently released NCRB 2023 report, in India, one cognizable crime was recorded every five seconds last year, totaling 6.24 million cases, which is 7.2% higher than in 2022. Cybercrime saw a sharp increase of 31%, crimes against women rose slightly by 0.7%, and crimes against children increased by 9.2%. The report also revealed that traditional violent crimes are declining, while cyber and economic crimes are on the rise. The data related to women is particularly noteworthy. Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest total cases (around 65,000), but due to its large population, the crime rate per lakh women was relatively low. In contrast, Kerala has the highest crime rate against women, while states like Delhi, Assam, Chhattisgarh, and Haryana also report significantly high rates.
