Italy is witnessing a historic drop in birth rates, with 2025 expected to record a new low. In 2024, only 370,000 births were registered, the lowest since the country’s unification in 1861. The birth rate fell further to 1.13 children per woman in the first seven months of 2025, marking the 16th consecutive year of decline despite government efforts to boost fertility. The aging population and rising retirement age are contributing to an older workforce, with significant social and economic impacts projected by 2050, raising concerns about Italy’s long-term demographic stability.
