International Civil Aviation Day, observed annually on 7 December, aims to raise global awareness about the significance of international air transport in social and economic development, and to underline ICAO’s key role in helping nations cooperate to build an efficient global aviation network. In 1996, following an ICAO-led initiative supported by Canada, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/51/33, officially designating 7 December as the day’s observance. As aviation moves into a new era with major challenges and opportunities, ICAO has released its 2026–2050 Strategic Plan to steer the sector towards safer, more secure, efficient, economically sustainable and environmentally responsible growth, with the number of air passengers projected to reach 12.4 billion by 2050.
