Indian scientists have discovered an enormous ancient galaxy named Alaknanda, which resembles the Milky Way and unusually displays well-defined spiral arms despite forming when the universe was only 1.5 billion years old.
Professor Yogesh Wadadekar of NCRA-TIFR stated that the galaxy appears as a mature, organised system—something expected only after around three billion years of evolution.
The finding is noteworthy because spiral structures like those in the Milky Way typically take billions of years to develop.
