The Government of India will launch the National Camel Sustainability Initiative (NCSI) to reverse the 75% decline in the country’s camel population and restore their ecological, cultural and economic role, especially in desert regions. Concentrated mainly in Rajasthan and Gujarat, camels face threats to both livelihoods and desert ecosystems. The multi-ministerial initiative will focus on conservation, breeding, and livelihood support, along with legal reforms, awareness campaigns, and educational integration, including celebrating World Camel Day. This will be India’s first dedicated national programme for camel protection and sustainable use.
