India’s wild elephant population has dropped to 22,446, according to the first DNA-based national census released by the Ministry of Environment, Project Elephant, and WII. The Synchronous All-India Elephant Estimation 2025 (SAIEE 2025) shows an 18% decline from 2017 estimates. Conducted across 20+ states using DNA analysis of dung samples, the census identified 4,065 unique elephants. The Western Ghats host the largest population (11,934 elephants). The study provides a scientific baseline for conservation, highlighting threats from habitat loss, corridor fragmentation, and human-elephant conflicts.
