Category : National Published on: October 23 2025
India has climbed one place to secure the 9th position globally in total forest area, while maintaining its 3rd rank in annual forest area gain, according to the Global Forest Resource Assessment (GFRA) 2025 released by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Bali. The Environment Ministry attributed this achievement to the success of large-scale afforestation, community-led forest protection efforts, and mass public participation in initiatives like ‘Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam’ under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. As per the FAO report, India follows Australia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Indonesia, placing it among the world’s top 10 forest-rich nations. Globally, the total forest area stands at 4.14 billion hectares, covering 32% of the Earth’s land surface, with over half of it concentrated in five countries — Russia, Brazil, Canada, the U.S., and China.
