India has emerged as one of the world’s most overworked countries, with employees working an average of 45.7 hours per week, according to the International Labour Organization’s 2024 report. The findings highlight risks of burnout, mental stress, and work-life imbalance, placing India alongside Bangladesh and Mongolia. Long hours are driven by informal sector norms, job insecurity, and digital connectivity. The report has renewed focus on the proposed Right to Disconnect Bill 2025, aiming to regulate after-hours work communication.
