Daily Current Affairs / India Achieves Significant Drop in Maternal Mortality
Category : National Published on: December 29 2025
India has made remarkable progress in maternal health, with institutional deliveries rising to 89%, driving a sharp decline in the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) to 97 per 1,00,000 live births. States like Kerala, Goa, Lakshadweep, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu report 100% institutional births, while rural and urban areas reach 87% and 94% respectively. Improved hospital access, skilled birth attendants, and emergency care have been key. Challenges remain, including high out-of-pocket expenses, sociocultural barriers, high-risk pregnancies, and weak infrastructure in remote regions.
The Supreme Court ruled menstrual health as a fundamental right under Article 21, mandating free sanitary facilities in all schools.
