Hurricane Melissa, a rare Category 5 storm, struck Jamaica near New Hope with winds up to 185 mph, causing catastrophic destruction. Homes, hospitals, and power lines were destroyed, leaving over half a million people without electricity. St. Elizabeth Parish was submerged, and major crop regions were ruined, sparking food and health crises. With 15,000 people displaced and severe flooding isolating communities, Jamaica was declared a disaster zone. Experts warn Melissa may be Jamaica’s worst storm in modern history, fueled by unusually warm Caribbean waters and climate change.
