  • Researchers from the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology have made a significant palaeontological discovery near Mohand, Dehradun, unearthing the first freshwater fish fossils in the Shivalik region. The 4.5-million-year-old otoliths belong to snakehead (Channa), goby, and gourami species from the Pliocene epoch.
  • The gourami fossil is the first recorded in India and only the second globally. This finding reveals the existence of a stable freshwater ecosystem with dense vegetation in northern India 4.5 million years ago and provides new insights into the region’s ancient biodiversity and biogeography.
