Researchers from the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology have made a significant palaeontological discovery near Mohand, Dehradun, unearthing the first freshwater fish fossils in the Shivalik region. The 4.5-million-year-old otoliths belong to snakehead (Channa), goby, and gourami species from the Pliocene epoch.
The gourami fossil is the first recorded in India and only the second globally. This finding reveals the existence of a stable freshwater ecosystem with dense vegetation in northern India 4.5 million years ago and provides new insights into the region’s ancient biodiversity and biogeography.
