  • Every year, the world celebrates the special occasion of World Press Freedom Day on May 03. 
  • It is a special occasion designated by UNESCO to spread awareness regarding the role media and press plays in our daily lives and society.
  • Media is considered the fourth pillar of democracy and is an integral part of balancing the domains in society.
  • This global event was proclaimed by UNGA in 1993, after the recommendation adopted at the 26th session of UNESCO’s general conference in 1991. 
  • This declaration was a response to the 1991 Windhoek Declaration, which was produced by African journalists who gathered to discuss press freedom at a seminar organised by UNESCO.
  • It concluded on May 03, and since then it is being celebrated as World Press Freedom Day worldwide.
  • The theme for World Press Freedom Day 2023 is “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for all other human rights.” 
  • The theme for 2022 was “Journalism under Surveillance”. 
  • Meanwhile “Information as a Public Good” was the theme for 2021.
