Every year, the world celebrates the special occasion of World Press Freedom Day on May 03.
It is a special occasion designated by UNESCO to spread awareness regarding the role media and press plays in our daily lives and society.
Media is considered the fourth pillar of democracy and is an integral part of balancing the domains in society.
This global event was proclaimed by UNGA in 1993, after the recommendation adopted at the 26th session of UNESCO’s general conference in 1991.
This declaration was a response to the 1991 Windhoek Declaration, which was produced by African journalists who gathered to discuss press freedom at a seminar organised by UNESCO.
It concluded on May 03, and since then it is being celebrated as World Press Freedom Day worldwide.
The theme for World Press Freedom Day 2023 is “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for all other human rights.”
The theme for 2022 was “Journalism under Surveillance”.
Meanwhile “Information as a Public Good” was the theme for 2021.
