World Fisheries Day, observed on 21 November, was marked with global participation as India showcased its leadership in sustainable fisheries and the blue economy. India, the world’s second-largest fish and aquaculture producer, emphasised the sector’s role in ensuring food security and supporting over 30 million livelihoods. This year’s theme, “India’s Blue Transformation: Strengthening Value Addition in Seafood Exports,” highlighted recent GST reductions on fish products and new reforms such as traceability frameworks, mariculture SOPs, and smart harbour guidelines. With delegates from 27 nations, the celebrations reinforced India’s commitment to responsible, transparent and globally competitive fisheries.
