  • A prominent political figure from Pune, Kalmadi, represented the city several times in the Lok Sabha.
  • He served as Minister of State for Railways from 1995 to 1996 during the tenure of Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and presented the Railway Budget in 1996.
  • Kalmadi was also president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) from 1996 to 2012.
