  • Senior Maharashtra politician Sharad Pawar announced his resignation as chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
  • Sharad Pawar formed the NCP in 1999 after separating from the Congress. 
  • The Congress had in 1999 expelled three dissident leaders, one of which was Sharad Pawar, for opposing Sonia Gandhi’s candidacy for Prime Minister because she was born in Italy.
  • He has served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for four ministries. 
  • He has served in the Union Council Of Ministers as the Minister of Defence in the Cabinet of P.V Narsimha Rao and Minister of Agriculture in the Cabinet of Manmahon Singh.
