  • Researchers have completed the first comprehensive analysis of the mitochondrial genome of the Madras hedgehog (Paraechinus nudiventris).
  • Also known as bare-bellied hedgehog or “Mulleli”, this species is endemic to peninsular India, mainly found in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and parts of Karnataka.
  • It inhabits dry scrublands and thorn forests, is nocturnal and curls into a ball for defence using sharp spines.
  • Primarily insectivorous, it plays a key role in controlling insect populations and soil aeration.
  • IUCN status: Least Concern, though faces threats from hunting and habitat loss.
