  • Bangladesh has started an emergency vaccination campaign targeting more than one million children amid a rapidly spreading measles outbreak.
  • Measles is a highly contagious airborne viral disease caused by a paramyxovirus; it spreads through droplets and remains infectious in air/surfaces for up to two hours.
  • Symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and characteristic rash; complications can include pneumonia and encephalitis.
  • No specific antiviral treatment; prevention through measles-rubella (MR) vaccine is most effective.
  • Unvaccinated children and pregnant women are at highest risk.
