Niger was declared the first country in Africa by the World Health Organization (WHO) on January 30, 2025, to have eliminated onchocerciasis (river blindness) as a public health threat.
This achievement for Niger is the result of efforts that began in 1976, which included the distribution of ivermectin and community treatment programs.
