Researchers have discovered a new non-venomous reed snake species, Calamaria mizoramensis, in Mizoram, highlighting the state’s rich but underexplored biodiversity. Led by Mizoram University scientists, the species was confirmed through genetic analysis showing over 15% divergence from known relatives and published in Zootaxa on January 5, 2026. The nocturnal, semi-fossorial snake inhabits humid forested hills, reinforcing Mizoram’s status as a key biodiversity hotspot in Northeast India.
