Under the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA), India’s Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) has fallen 50 points, from 130 (2014–16) to 80 (2021–23).
PMSMA emphasizes free antenatal care, nutritional support, high-risk check-ups, and infrastructure upgrades.
With over nine years of consistent effort, states with previously high MMR have seen marked reductions.
This reflects strengthened maternal healthcare delivery and aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 3).
