Justice Surya Kant took oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on 24 November 2025, administered by President Droupadi Murmu, succeeding Justice B.R. Gavai. Born on 10 February 1962 in Haryana, he began practising law in 1984, served as Haryana’s youngest Advocate General in 2000, and was elevated to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2004. Prior to his Supreme Court appointment in 2019, he was Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. His priorities as CJI include reducing case pendency, strengthening judicial efficiency, forming Constitution Benches for long-pending matters, and promoting mediation and alternative dispute resolution.
A second effusive eruption began at Piton de la Fournaise on La Réunion on February 13, with lava flowing down the Grandes Pentes slopes.
