  • International Mother Language Day is commemorated on February 21. 
  • The purpose of celebrating this day is to create trends and spread awareness among people about their language and culture around the world.
  • The United Nations-designated day recognises that languages and multilingualism can advance inclusion, and the Sustainable Development Goals’ focus on leaving no one behind.
  • The theme of the year 2022 is “Using technology for multilingual learning: Challenges and opportunities”.
  • There are 121 languages in India. 22 of them are specified in the Eighth Schedule to the constitution of India mentioned in part A, while the rest 99 are specified in part B. In addition to that India has 270 mother languages as well.
  • English comes under the category of non-scheduled languages i.e not specified in the eighth schedule.
