  • India’s unemployment rate witnessed a sharp decline to 6.57 percent in January, the lowest since March 2021, according to the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), as the country gradually eases restrictions following a drop in Omicron cases.
  • According to data from the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), the monthly unemployment rate in May 2021 was 14.7 percent. The current urban unemployment rate has come down 6.54 percentage points from 14.7 percent in May 2021 to 8.16 percent in January 2022.
  • Telangana recorded the lowest unemployment rate at 0.7 percent in January, followed by Gujarat (1.2 percent), Meghalaya (1.5 percent), and Odisha (1.8 percent). Haryana has the highest unemployment rate in India, followed by Rajasthan.
