The Narendra Modi government implemented four new labour codes on November 21, 2025, consolidating 29 existing central labour laws. These include the Code on Wages, Industrial Relations Code, Code on Social Security and Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code. The reforms modernize labour governance, ensure minimum wages, extend social security to gig workers, and strengthen protections for contract and migrant workers. Key features include mandatory appointment letters, annual health check-ups, night work permissions for women, and faster dispute resolution, promoting workers’ rights and ease of doing business.
