The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has initiated the “Sahajeevan” project to relocate stray dogs from sensitive areas like schools and hospitals, following Supreme Court directives. The project ensures dogs are vaccinated, sterilized, and relocated to shelters, promoting human-animal coexistence. Challenges include manpower shortages, limited shelters, and rising stray populations, which grew from 90,000 in 2013 to 1.5 lakh in 2024. Alongside, GMC plans urban development initiatives such as road construction, street lighting, drainage cleaning, and relocating its office, reflecting a broader commitment to city improvement and public welfare.
