The Indian government has issued an official gazette notification for conducting the country's 16th census, which will include a caste component. The first phase will start in snow-bound regions like Ladakh on October 1, 2026, while the second phase will begin across the rest of India on March 1, 2027. This census will be conducted after a 16-year hiatus, with the last one carried out in 2011.
