  • The first breeding site of the Blue-Cheeked Bee-eater (merops persicus) in peninsular India has been discovered in the saltpans of Aandivilai near the Manakudy Mangroves in Kanniyakumari district.
  • The bird belongs to the Meropidae family and was earlier considered to be the only migratory and winter visitor in India. It usually breeds in the Nile Delta, Pakistan, and Iran, while it spends winters in Africa.
