According to the Climate Inequality Report 2025 titled “Climate Change: A Capital Challenge – Why Climate Policy Must Tackle Ownership,” the world’s richest 1% account for 15% of global consumption-based emissions, while 41% of total emissions are linked to their capital ownership. The report emphasizes that wealthy individuals contribute more to the climate crisis through their investments in high-emission industries than through personal consumption. It calls for global fossil fuel investment bans, carbon-content taxes on assets, and large-scale public investment in low-carbon infrastructure.
