China approved the construction of a marine research facility at a depth of 2,000 meters in the South China Sea on February 12, 2025, which will focus on the study of cold seep ecosystems, methane hydrates, and unique marine life.
This project will include advanced technology, long-term life support systems, and integrated facilities with unmanned submarines, potentially raising geopolitical concerns for both scientific and military purposes.
