Daily Current Affairs / Bangladesh Becomes First South Asian Nation to Join UN Water Convention
Category : International Published on: November 13 2025
Bangladesh made history by becoming the first South Asian country and the 56th globally to join the United Nations Water Convention, a key treaty for cooperation on transboundary water resources. The move aims to promote sustainable water governance, equitable use and conflict prevention over shared rivers like the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna. Joining the Convention strengthens Bangladesh’s position in addressing climate-induced water challenges and cross-border disputes. While India remains a non-signatory, Bangladesh’s step marks a landmark shift in South Asia’s regional water diplomacy and could inspire other nations toward cooperative management.
