Daily Current Affairs / Assam Introduces Landmark Bill to Criminalise Polygamy
Category : State Published on: November 27 2025
Assam has introduced a landmark bill to criminalise polygamy, aiming to strengthen women’s rights and reform personal laws. The proposed law applies across the state except in Sixth Schedule areas and excludes Scheduled Tribes under Article 342. It defines polygamy clearly, prescribing up to seven years’ imprisonment for a first offence and harsher penalties for concealment or repeat violations. Facilitators may also face punishment. Convicted individuals will lose eligibility for state jobs, welfare schemes, and local body elections, adding strong civic deterrence.
