World Iodine Deficiency Day: 21 October

Every year on the 21st of October, the world commemorates World Iodine Deficiency Day. This day is marked to promote awareness about the relevance of iodine in the development of a person.
Since the 1980s, the World Health Organization (WHO) has been developing national salt iodization projects to highlight the impacts of iodine shortage. UNICEF has strategized various international projects with the International Council for Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (ICCIDC) and has been able to deliver iodized salt to 66% of households.
The universal salt iodisation programme is a global approach for IDD that was launched in 1993 and has helped most countries make significant progress in combating this endemic health problem.
