  • World Hindi Day is observed on January 10 to honour the language.
  • However, the day is not the same as National Hindi Diwas that is celebrated every year on September 14.
  • Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh had announced in 2006 to celebrate Hindi Diwas on 10 January every year for the promotion of Hindi. World Hindi conferences have been started with the aim of developing Hindi in the world and to propagate it as an international language.
  • The first World Hindi Conference was held on 10 January 1975 in Nagpur.
  • The first World Hindi Conference was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
  • The word ‘Hindi’ got its name from the Persian word Hind which means the 'land of Indus River'. The language is derived from Sanskrit and is written in the Devnagari script.
  • Apart from India, there is a significant number of Hindi speakers in all countries like Nepal, Mauritius, Fiji, Suriname, Uganda, Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Africa, and Canada.
