Union Cabinet clears proposal to raise marriage age of women from 18 to 21

The Union Cabinet has approved a resolution to raise the legal marriage age for women from 18 to 21 years, bringing them in line with men.
The statement was made a year ago during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day address from the Red Fort in August 2020.
Currently, the minimum marriage age for men is 21 and for women is 18. To give the new proposal shape, the government will amend the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, Special Marriage Act, and Hindu Marriage Act.
The minimum age for the bride is 18 years, and the minimum age for the groom is 21 years, according to Section 5 (iii) of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955.
