  • Indian chess player R Vaishali scripted history by winning the Women’s Candidates Tournament 2026 in Cyprus.
  • She became only the second Indian woman, after Koneru Humpy, to qualify for the Women’s World Chess Championship.
  • She will challenge reigning champion Ju Wenjun.
  • Starting at the bottom after 5 rounds, she took the lead in Round 10 and bounced back strongly after a setback in Round 12.
  • Tied with Bibisara Assaubayeva, Divya Deshmukh’s draw helped Vaishali clinch the title in a dramatic final round.
