Number of vultures in Madhya Pradesh reaches 12,981, highest increase recorded in census

  • In Madhya Pradesh, a 12% increase in the number of vultures has been recorded since 2016, with a total of 7,906 vultures found in the 2023 survey, of which 45% were found in protected areas, with the highest numbers recorded in Raisen (658) and Mandsaur (650). 
  • Several areas, including Panna Tiger Reserve (30% decline) and Kuno-Palpur (32% decline), have seen a decrease in vulture numbers, while the effects of diclofenac have wiped out 99% of the breeding vulture population.
