ISRO successfully tests IAD technology to land missions on Mars, Venus

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully tested the Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator (IAD) that will be used for landing payloads on Mars or Venus in the future. 
  • The IAD is being developed for aerodynamically decelerating an object descending through the atmosphere.
  • An IAD, designed and developed by Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), was successfully test flown in a 'Rohini' sounding rocket from Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS).
  • The IAD is made out of Kevlar fabric, coated with Polychloroprene. Since it is made of fabric, IAD can be packed into a small volume of 15 liters, available in the nosecone of the RH300.
