‘India State of Forest Report 2021’ prepared by FSI released

  • Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, released the ‘India State of Forest Report 2021’ on 13 Jan 2022.
  • The country’s forest and tree cover is spread across 8.09 lakh sq. km, an increase of 2,261 sq. km since 2019 according to the latest edition of India’s ‘State of Forest Report’, for the year 2021.
  • It has been prepared by the Forest Survey of India (FSI) which has been mandated to assess the forest and tree resources of the country.
  • Area-wise Madhya Pradesh has the largest forest cover.
  • The total forest and tree cover of the country is 80.9 mn hectare.
  • The maximum increase in forest area was recorded in Andhra Pradesh (647 sq km), followed by Telangana (632 sq km) and Odisha (537 sq km).
