India’s first voter Shyam Saran Negi passes away at 106

  • The country's first voter 106-year old Master Shyam Saran Negi passed away after a prolonged illness.
  • He was fondly known as Master Shyam. 
  • He was a resident of Kalpa in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh.
  • Negi, who first voted in 1952, had even cast his postal ballot vote for the 2022 Assembly elections two days ago.
  • He became the first voter of independent India when the general polls were conducted in January and February of 1952. He cast his first vote on October 23, 1951, at the Kalpa polling station.
  • Negi was featured in several awareness campaigns and ads of the Election Commission and private companies.
